Government backbencher urges help for householders and their utility bills

Backbencher David Brandt is calling on the government to provide some relief to consumers who were faced with a high electricity bill last month.

The surge in cost of electricity in January is blamed on the surcharge, which jumped significantly due to the price of diesel.

Montserrat Utilities Limited explained

Residents on Montserrat have been receiving a more detailed explanation about the merger of Montserrat Electricity Services (MONLEC) and the Montserrat Water Authority (MWA).

Both service companies have been brought together as one entity called the Montserrat Utilities Limited (MUL).


Head of MUL Mr. Peter White has been using a radio and television campaign to explain to residents why the move was necessary, the functions of the new company and its future plans.

Talks about the merger of the MONLEC and MWA have been taking place on Montserrat for some time now.

Increase in sight testing clinics on Montserrat

Health officials are moving to increase the number of eye screening procedures at district clinics.

This comes as a number of nurses are engaged in an ongoing eye care training course.

The 10 week training is organized by the Montserrat Diabetes Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and aims to train a group of nurses with the necessary skills to provide basic eye care services on the island.

Past President of the Montserrat Diabetes Association Valerie Lewis Lynch says the long term objective is to have an eye care programme similar in standard to what existed in Plymouth.

Social Security Honours long serving members

Two Long serving members of the board of directors of the Montserrat Social Security Scheme, have been honoured for their contribution to the development of the organization.

Messers DRV Frank Edwards and Kenneth Cassell have given up their positions as Board members after been involved with the scheme for many years.

Mr. Edwards served the Social Security Board for twenty five years most of that time as Chairman, while Mr. Cassell served as Employers representative firstly and the as Deputy Chair.
