The Green Monkey Dive Shop announces the latest addition to its itinerary of scuba tours, Dive Redonda. Redonda’s underwater world offers pristine virgin diving with magnificent visibility. Divers will marvel at six-foot barrel sponges, completely untouched by human hands. Swim with giant Southern Stingrays, Moray Eels, Sea Turtles, and the occasional Spotted Eagle Ray, while keeping watch for Nurse Sharks and ancient Barracudas reaching more than five feet long. Explore the Caves at “The World’s End”, the northernmost point of the island. Divers can also search for remnants of the sunken barge along with ships’ anchors, some more than twenty feet in length and encrusted in a myriad of multi-colored coral. The island “Kingdom” of Redonda lies fifteen miles northwest of Montserrat, West Indies. Divers will board the Green Monkey dive boat for a short forty-five minute ride to this uninhabited remnant of an extinct volcano. The ride to and from the island also provides excellent opportunities to view Montserrat’s coastline and the grumbling Soufrière Hills Volcano. Redonda was originally claimed by Montserratian Sea Trader Matthew Dowdy, who subsequently handed the island to his son on the occasion of his fifteenth birthday. The son, Matthew Phipps Shiell, thereafter became known as King Felipe I of Redonda. In the meantime, the British government annexed the island and phosphate mining from the guano of the resident Booby Birds began in the late 1800’s. Mining stopped during the first World War and never resumed. Today, you can still see remnants of the mining operations, both on land and under the sea. Dive Redonda trips are exclusive to The Green Monkey Dive Shop and include a two-tank dive, dive equipment, transportation, and refreshments. Trips are $115 per person and can be scheduled according to individual diver’s needs (a four person minimum is required for the trip).
Coming
in 2007-
The
Royal Monkey Navy is
looking for a few good men
and women! Join our unarmed
forces as they seek to
overthrow the Kingdom of
Redonda and return it to
Montserratian rule. The
ownership of the throne is
in chaos and dispute. While
the so-called Kings jockey
for position, our forces
will approach by sea, climb
to Sheill’s Summit and plant
the Royal Monkey Flag. Be a
part of this historic event
as the future King and
Queen, Troy and Melody,
begin a new era of hope and
prosperity for the Kingdom
of Redonda.
