GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Following on the heels of the January 26 massacre at Lusignan where 11 persons, including children and women, were killed and the February 17 killings in Bartica where another 12 persons were killed by gunmen, yet another tragedy has struck Guyana.

This time eight miners were shot and killed in the Berbice River area.

The details regarding the shooting and who may be responsible are still sketchy,

However, according to confirmed reports, dredge owner George Arokium arrived at his Lindo Creek, Upper Berbice River mining camp on Saturday and found all his workers dead.

According to the miner’s son, his father went there to deliver some rations when he made the discovery.

He says among the men shot and killed are 28-yea- old Dax Arokium, son of the dredge owner, and his 46 year old uncle Fredrick Arokium.

Those who did the shooting reportedly carted off all the minerals from the camp.

The police were alerted and are reportedly making arrangements to travel to the area.

But sources say the camp may have been attacked by the group of gunmen who the Joint Services are pursuing in the same area.

Only Monday last, the Joint Services had killed two gunmen a few miles from the creek at Goat Farm.

The men were known criminal elements for whom wanted bulletins were issued along with several others

They had in their possession two AK-47 rifles that were used at the Lusignan and Bartica massacres.

One of the two weapons was stolen from an army a patrol that was ambushed at Buxton east coast Demerara on January 23, where GDF corporal Ivor Williams was killed.
