(Letter to the Governor concerning Montserrat under the TPS in the USA)

H.E Governor Deborah Barnes-Jones

Governor’s Office

Lancaster House

Olveston

MONTSERRAT

 Your Excellency

MONTSERRATIANS UNDER THE TPS IN THE USA

You are aware of the USA announcement which will terminate the Temporary Protective Status (TPS) of Montserratians living in the United States of America with effect 27 February 2005.

Some two hundred and ninety two (292) persons will be forced to return to Montserrat or face deportation if adequate immigration arrangements are not in place.  The current situation in Montserrat is inadequate for the viable existence of these Montserratians.  Housing accommodation and job opportunities are still to be established that will allow persons to live in a sustainable economic and social environment.

Government of Montserrat is therefore respectfully requesting that Her Majesty’s Government intervene on behalf of these unfortunate Montserratians.  Many of whom now own homes, hold jobs and are raising their children.   Further disruption to the lives of persons concerned would place tremendous social and financial pressures on Montserrat.

Once again we respectfully ask that you use your good office to present our case to Her Majesty’s Government for their intervention on our behalf.

 Yours sincerely

Margaret Dyer-Howe

HON CHIEF MINISTER (Ag)
